Catching up with the digital revolution

I’m a sucker for technology. Not quite as bad to be considered a genuine tech junkie, but close. Considering I’m a girl afterall (as I keep having to remind myself). When something techy pops up, I’d admire it and explore to great detail its specs (like the new iPhone), although that doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll adopt the technology or get the gadget straight away.

Recently I acquired a sleek new black N73 ME (Music Edition). That’s one sweet phone – one loaded with enough features for Nokia to label it a ‘multimedia computer’. In Singapore, with that thing, I’m totally ‘on-the-go’.

My current laptop is my 4th one since I embarked on overseas studies. First it was my dad’s ailing Gateway, then it was a Dell, and two Fujitsus in succession. Not to mention the three HDDs I have and the thick tangle of USB cords hanging from my laptop’s ports.

In my drawer sits a Game Boy – a Nintendo DS, which comes after my first, the ancient original Game Boy (released 1989). (One has to let the kid take over from time to time…)

There’s also an iPod photo in my electronics pouch and a Nano on my desk.

Ahh yes, and my beloved dSLR and associated lenses.

Webcams I’ve been through a few, and phones… a handful, although my 8310 and 6230 are still with me.

The sketchpad and pencil used to be one of my best friends, but now I have a tablet.

And now… finally, a PDA, a Palm T|X. An old model but it gives a big bang for the bucks. It’ll definitely come in useful for my course and my work.

Sheesh, my life isn’t just on verge of being overrun. It has been overrun, digitised… made more efficient and mobile, but now I have to deal with a bunch of tangled-up cables, chargers and adapters…

All these gadgets consume energy in their own little ways. Do they weigh on my conscience?

What if one day electricity dies on you and your dependance on these gadgets becomes a burden. Well, I am supposed to be the Engineer, but look!!! I am thinking of ‘what ifs’ such as applying to PPE instead of EEE – afterall it’s only 2 letters different. Ok, anyway, maybe in the age of digital revolution, the true skills of analogue lifestyle is one which is to be valued!

Maybe one day we can digitalise feelings, thoughts and senses…

If one day electricity ‘dies’ on me, it will die on the rest as well. Society and the economy would not be able to function in that state. There’d be chaos! Any cut in electricity supply would have to be temporary…Electricity is something that’s generated, it is converted from other forms of energy, so there’ll always be alternative sources.

    Bah, futile thoughts, these.

In any case, I suppose I could go hunt down an electric eel and adopt it as a pet…
