Entomologyness

When I came across two arthropod types this evening, I had no idea what they were. One from the kitchen hit me as particularly isopody, somewhat termite-ish, but not entirely. I have ‘left’ the ecological sciences alone for so long that I had almost forgotten which order the termites belonged to. I had to consult my entomology text. Then there was another insect, comically-proportioned and waddling across the floor. It looked somewhat earwig-ish, and almost like a Zoraptera, but was at least double its size. Took out the microscope out so that we could proceed to count its abdominal and antennal segments. After noting that it had four wings and enlarged femurs, it wasn’t too hard to pin down – that one was very likely an embiid. Whilst looking up the ‘net for more information, I did an image search for termites. >_< As it turned out, the first creature was a termite king…
